The Choi Hung Estate is one of the oldest public housing estates in Hong Kong, located in the Wong Tai Sin District of Kowloon. The estate received a Silver Medal at the 1965 Hong Kong Institute of Architects Annual Awards and has become famous for its bright 'rainbow homes’. The government provides these types of subsidized public housing so that low income residents can afford somewhere to live: according to The Economist, Hong Kong has the second highest cost of living in the world. These homes were painted in pastel colours to uplift the residents’ spirits and the site has become somewhat of a tourist attraction all on its own.
